Common questions
Do locksmiths need a license?
In California, yes: anyone who rekeys, installs, repairs or opens locks or originates keys for pay needs a BSIS locksmith license or registration (Bus. & Prof. Code 6980.10). In Illinois, locksmiths and locksmith agencies are licensed by IDFPR (225 ILCS 447/10-5). Many other states don't license locksmiths.
How can I tell a real locksmith from a call center?
Look for a license number and a real business name and address, check them here or on the state's lookup, get the total price on the phone, and ask the technician for a registration card. Illinois requires the license number in every locksmith ad (225 ILCS 447/35-15).
Does a key-cutting kiosk or hardware store need a locksmith license?
Simply duplicating existing keys is not locksmith work in California, according to BSIS. Illinois exempts retail merchants who sell locks or duplicate keys, if they don't hold themselves out as locksmiths (225 ILCS 447/30-5).
Are locksmiths insured?
Illinois requires licensed locksmiths to carry general liability insurance and prove it to IDFPR, or the license is cancelled (225 ILCS 447/30-10). California's public license file doesn't show insurance, so ask any locksmith for a certificate before commercial work.
Why does an Illinois listing say "discipline on record"?
IDFPR's licensing file records a disciplinary action against that license. We show each entry exactly as IDFPR publishes it; the status shown is today's status.
Why is there no phone number?
Neither state's public file includes phone numbers. Use the form on a listing and we pass your message on, or ask the locksmith to claim its listing and add one.
